The Benefits of Walking

A health care professional with years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Ellen Scharaga currently works as an operational consultant with Alegria Specialty Pharmacy in Melville, NY. Her prior executive experience includes positions as general manager with Health Infusion and director of pharmacy for ABEL Health Management Services, Inc. In her free time, Ellen Scharaga enjoys walking.

While it may not seem like much, walking is a beneficial physical activity and one of the easiest to stick with; it has the lowest dropout rate of all forms of exercise.

Furthermore, like most forms of exercise, walking offers both physical and mental benefits. Doctors have found that 30 minutes of walking per day can lead to an overall improvement in health, including reduced risks of coronary health disease and osteoporosis and improved blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Mental benefits of daily walking include a decreased risk of Alzheimer’s disease, an improvement in quality of sleep, and a slower memory decline. In addition to these benefits, walking serves as a natural mood enhancer.
